Herniated discs in neck?

I have two herniated discs in my neck and wanted to know if anyone could tell me what excercises I could do to try to keep my arms tone? Yes, it hurts bad and have sought chiropractic care and they want me to go to therapy, but is this something I can do at home? Thank you for your help...
Answer:
yes and no. Alleviating pain is one thing..taking care of the herniation is the other. For example: If you break your arm and then take pain medication..did you heal the break or only alleviate the symptom of the actual problem.Exercises can alleviate some symptoms, but overall you need to fix the disc.Chiropractic care, through adjustments of the vertebrea, re-establish proper and essential movement at the joint level. This movement supplies the disc with nutrients, imbibition. So, all in all, seek chiropractic care and do exercises on top of adjustments. Also massage will help, along with electrical therapy, heat/ice, ultrasound, etc. Bottom line: you still need to move the bone(s)!!
Lift with free weights not exercise machinery. Use lighter weights but more reps. I recommend the physical thearpy. They can teach you how to work around your injury and how to best use your muscles and even have you gain flexability. If worst comes to worst, surgery works wonders.
you need to go to your doctor, you should have permanent damage
Ask your chiropractor for a home traction device so you can do some home care. Traction is the best thing for cervical disc herniation. It opens the IVF (intravertebral foreman) which helps relieve the pressure of the nerves and therefore reduce the pain. Then you can do your arm workouts as well.
Good Luck.Dr. Ali, DC
Have you tried swimming? Swimming is good for people who have herniated disc because the water supports their weight. I also have a problem with my spine, so I took a swimming class. It does help by conditioning and toning my muscles. Try this site for for info on your neck http://www.spine-health.com/topics/cd/ne...
try getting a thera ball or something a little smaller and lifting it strait up and down several times (20-30). Do this several times a day. Be very careful not to twist your c-spaine when you do it though, that will aggravate the discs. Lifting hand weights can't hurt either unless they're like 10 pounds a piece. Basically, anything that doesn't require twisting your c-spine.
